~The Earth Kingdom~
The Earth kingdom has many cultures, and its ways vary from city to city, and town to town, but some things do stay the same. There is a loyalty to family and clan that is stressed; this however, can lead to grudges being held for unreasonable amounts of time between clans.
Each city has its own economic system, and cities currently under control of the fire nation are forced to submit to its ways. However, this leads to unrest in many of those cities and the locals start up militia for guerilla tactics. Earth Kingdom men and women all share a sense of pride and love of their own land that automatically resents being lorded over by the fire nation.
The Earth Kingdom is divided into feudal territories, ruled by a central city and its leader. King Bumi in Omashu is one such example. The capital city of Ba Sing Se has a ruler to whom all the others pay tribute, much like it was done in feudal Japan. Consequently, little things will be different from city to city. Travelers are tolerated with a polite deference in most cases, and depended on the size of the city or village they might be either feared, arrested, or ignored.
Though the Earth Kingdom has a lot of variances in culture, in the area where a belief or practice is prevalent, they will stick to it with a vengeance. It should also be noted that with the exception of Kyoshi Island that gender roles are what we would consider old fashioned.
Some of the larger cities even feature Geisha districts. Or, Yellow Light districts, (named for the yellow lanterns that are hung in the window and doors as an advertisement of their trade) it should be noted that not all of these are women are simply prostitutes. Many are highly educated young women who are paid to entertain men with song, dance, and poetry. They are also trained in tea preparation. It is among Geisha that you will find spies for Earth Kingdom armies, as no Earth Kingdom born Geisha would willingly serve as a spy for the Fire Nation. These young women can be even more deadly than their male counterparts and in occupied cities it hasn’t been uncommon for Fire Nation soldiers on leave to vanish in the Yellow Light districts.
Everyone in the Earth Kingdom attempts to find ways to fight the Fire Nation when they push to close to the places they consider home.
