As a preamble - my apologies if I've screwed this up. I'm ALMOST 100% certain this is the right spot, so here we go:
_____
Character: Aang

Role Playing References: (if you have them, I would like them. ^___~) Welcome To Paradox; X-RP; Hogwarts: On Crack. Note that the first and third are now inactive and I've left the second.
Brief Character History: Little is known about Aang's earliest days. One can assume that he was born to a family of Air Nomads more than a century ago, and was sent to live with the monks of the Southern Air Temple at a very young age once he demonstrated signs of an innate and powerful ability to Airbend.
The Avatar cycle had run its course and once more the monks were destined to find the new Avatar somewhere in their ranks. As a result they tested all incoming children by having them select from a vast array of children's toys - four of which belonged to Avatars of generations past. The young Aang was subject to this test as well, and he was the child who selected the proper items, thereby confirming his status as the newest Avatar.
The information was kept from him; and was supposed to be kept secret until Aang's sixteenth birthday. He grew up with the other monks and the other children, standing out only via his impressive mastery of Airbending at a young age. He was apprenticed to one of the monks, a jovial, cake-loving man named Gyatso, and formed a close relationship with him. Gyatso was intent upon allowing Aang to grow up as just another child - intending to allow the young boy something resembling a normal life until the news of his destiny was imparted to him.
The increasing threat of the Fire Nation resulted in Aang being told of his destiny a full four years before he was supposed to. He found himself ostracized amongst the other children, and found himself a frequent topic of dissent amongst the monks. Whereas Gyatso still maintained that Aang needed to have fun just as any other young boy would, the other monks ascertained that it was time for the Avatar to undergo more stringent training, and proposed that he and Gyatso be separated.
Aang overheard this exchange; and this coupled with the divide between him and his peers was enough to make him run away from the Southern Air Temple. Mounting Appa, his flying bison, he flew away from the Southern Temple and straight into a storm. The storm was too strong for him, and he and Appa were thrown into the water. As they sank, the spirit of the Avatar awoke inside Aang, allowing him to create a powerful pocket of air around both himself and the bison. However, the ocean water they sank into was too cold, and the air pocket that Aang had created froze the water around him - effectively trapping he and Appa into an iceberg, from which he would not escape until 100 years later, when a Southern Water Tribe girl named Katara and her brother Sokka stumbled upon the iceberg and freed him.
Now awakened, Aang has learned of the events that have transpired over his century-long absence and is now dedicating himself to mastering the four elements such that he can save the world from the Fire Nation's onslaught. He has participated in and helped facilitate the thwarting of the Fire Nation in their attempted siege of the Northern Water Tribe.
Brief Character Personality: Aang is a happy-go-lucky, optimistic (sometimes to the point of naivete) little boy who simply likes to have fun. He can always seem to find time for penguin sledding or riding giant elephant koi. He understands his role as the Avatar, but that in and of itself doesn't dictate his personality. Generally, he can be cheeky and curious about what is going on around him; and he has a tendency to be overly friendly toward people. As of late though, he is experiencing the typical highs and lows that preteens everywhere face: sometimes he is happy and sometimes he is grumpy. Overall, Aang is more 'normal' than you'd expect.
Character Motivation: It's interesting to note that Aang never really wanted to be the Avatar; however, now that he has reawakened in the middle of the war, he is now determined to do what he can to make a difference, even if his only motivation is the ulterior motive of protecting Sokka and Katara, whom he considers to be his family now.
Character Strengths: Not including his Airbending skills, Aang has the talent to see the best in every situation; he is honest and cares about people. He is also a quick learner and has a certain streak of ingenuity that has gotten him out of some sticky situations.
Character Weakness: The same streak of ingenuity can sometimes backfire on Aang; his lack of true life experience can sometimes get he and Katara and Sokka into more trouble than they bargained for. Aang can also be a little bit on the thingyy side; his impressive grasp of Airbending and identity as the Avatar can sometimes convince him that he can do anything faster, better, and more impressively than anyone else, even without proper practise. His naivete has also proved to be his undoing from time to time - but once again this goes back to his lack of life experience.
Character Bending/Warrior Skills: Aang is an airbender; he has more or less mastered the skill of manipulating air currents to suit his own needs. He has also recently begun training under the waterbending master named Pakku; his skills in that arena are solid and are improving every day. Aang's particular style of fighting is passive-aggressive; he will defend himself first before striking a blow. His skills with airbending are of a calibre that does not result in this being a weakness, however - his powers of control and reservation have helped him defeat many enemies.
Character Talents: Bending aside, Aang has an affinity for animals. He treats both Appa and his recently-acquired lemur, Momo, as equals. He is also known to make jewlery out of fishing line on occasion.
Plans to develop the character: Naturally Aang will eventually have to master the other elements. He is well on his way in Waterbending, but still has to undergo prolonged formal training in both Fire and Earth. Also, seeing as how we're dealing with a 12-year-old boy, I think Aang will eventually have to truly learn what the implications of him being the Avatar are. In other words, he's going to start growing up. Perhaps he'll lose his almost naive optimism and become more spiritual. These are all simply ideas, of course - I'm writing my so-called 'plans' as quite sketchy and general because one really never knows how a character develops in an RP until game-play starts. And I suppose poor Aang might have to deal with the possibility of *gasp* romance as he grows up.
Role Playing Sample: He'd never felt cold before. All those times up in the air, down at the South Pole, even here at the North Pole, surrounded by snow, he'd never felt the cold.
Watching the Fire Nation retreat had suddenly made Aang frightfully aware of how cold it was.
Among other things.
It was a nice day; the sun was shining off the snow just so, and many of the Waterbenders were exercising without parkas. There was even a warmer-than-usual breeze coming across toward the city that was slowly being reconstructed. But all the while Aang still felt cold. As he stood at the top of a tower overlooking most of the settlement, he shivered, pulling his light garments closer to his body. It didn't really help.
He didn't want to leave the North Pole. And this time it wasn't for silly reasons - he wasn't garnering any attention - okay, scratch that, he was; but there was no unwanted fawning over the presence of the Avatar in the midst of the Northern Water tribe. So it wasn't like Kyoshi. There were no stone slides like in Omashu. There was just he, Katara, Sokka, Appa and Momo, and the realization that the war had just hit home.
He didn't want these people to be left unguarded. He didn't want to leave anyone behind anymore, or to let anyone down.
"Aang, are you coming?" Sokka's voice drifted to Aang's ears from a distance. Aang looked and saw the Southern Water Tribe boy on top of Appa, waving his arms frantically. "We've got work to do if you're going to kick the Fire Lord's butt!" Katara was there as well, fussing with their supplies, ensuring that they'd have enough to eat for their journey to nobody-knew-where.
Aang blinked. "Sure, Sokka," he said, ambling over to where the giant bison stood, his giant black nose rumbling the air each time he drew a breath. "Let's go."
Taking his place atop Appa's vast, arrow-marked head, Aang took the reins and began his journey to defeat the Fire Lord.
"Yip yip."
