Name: Royama Gan
Age: 15
Nationality: Earth Kingdom
Job: Earthbender-in-training
Hair: Black
Eyes: Black
Weight: 185lbs
Height: 5'2"
Family: Two parents, five older brothers, extended family.
Likes: Walking barefoot (incidentally, his shoes are in near-pristine condition), reading, playing thinking board games like Pai Shou, puzzles, meditating, doing his kata, smithing with pure metals, cooking, good food.
Dislikes: Fighting, Firebenders, mediating conflicts.
Combat/Bending Skills: Earthbender, is also skilled with staff, half-staff, and double half-staff.
Talents: Fighting, mediating, cooking, analyzing people. He's also quite good at Earthbending pure metals, especially gold and silver, into beautiful shapes either as jewelry or sculpture though he prefers the former to the latter.
Motivation: His teacher decided that Gan could benefit quite a bit from some real-world experience, so he told Gan not to return for at least a year. Gan is not happy about this.
Personality: Very quiet most of the time, yet he's hard to shut up if you get him started on jewelry-smithing. He would rather observe and take his time on a decision, though he's quick when it counts.
Personality Strengths: Self-control, calming presence, good listener, prideful, loyal, occasional spontaneity.
Personality Flaws: Reserved, stubborn, prideful, holds a grudge like nothing else.
Weaknesses: He likes to visit jewelry stands/shops to see what they've made, and he will say aloud if the quality of the workmanship is, in his mind, inferior. This can often lead to arguments as he sees himself in the right and the other in the wrong.
Brief History: Gan is the youngest of six brothers and the second one to manifesting Earthbending abilities. Before that, though, his life was typical of a boy from large nuclear and extended family of Earth Kingdom. He roughhoused with his brothers still living at home and with his cousins, marveled at what Earthbenders could do, learned the rules of society and merits of loyalty, and was taught to defend himself in a fight. He fell in love with bright jewelry and gemstones early on. One of his relatives is a noted jeweler and was only too pleased to start teaching about the properties of metals and gems to Gan.
His parents were both proud and relieved when Gan was found to have Earthbending powers. Proud that they had a second son with ability, and relieved that they wouldn't have to worry about supporting him completely since he would be staying with his teacher. They did visit him as often they could so they could keep appraised of his progress.
Gan's sharp mind and powers of astute observation quickly surfaced, much to his teacher's delight. He is no slouch when it comes to fighting either and is proficient in hand-to-hand as well as weapon's fighting, preferring staff. During his second year under his teacher, Gan was presented with a cunningly made staff that is essentially two half-staves tipped with pure iron on both ends. Earthbending alone allows for the separating of the half-staves and the recombining of them into a full staff
If his teacher despairs of anything, it is teaching Gan that given the war with the Fire Nation, Earthbenders must be ready to fight and fight well if called upon to serve in the army. Gan hates fighting and when he does fight it's only reluctantly and he remains on the defensive, refusing to go offensive. So, after two and a half years of instruction Gan's teacher gave this edict: Gan was to go out into the world for at least a year to get some "practical experience". The teacher know its risky; there's no guarantee Gan would survive because anything could happen. Gan's teacher is confident, however, that Gan possesses the teachings, skills, instincts and intuition will enable him get through whatever's thrown his way.
Gan doesn't want to do this, feeling it stupid, but he is loyal to his teacher and will follow his instructions, no matter how asinine (in this case, anyway) they may seem to Gan.
Description: Gan has fair but not pale skin so he doesn't have to worry about turning into a lobster in no time flat in the sun. His black hair is tied back in a loose braid except for two lengths of hair that frame his face and his black eyes are perhaps slightly rounder than is typical of his countrymen.
Because he gets bored easily, and because his kinsman wants him to practice working with precious metals, he has two simple earrings of gold and silver twisted together and on his wrists he has one wide gold wrist cuff and one wide silver wrist cuff. As with his earrings, he has to use his Earthbending abilities to get his jewelry off.
He is fairly built, owing to the excises and training regimens his teacher put him through but you wouldn't know it by the looseness of his clothing. He clothes sturdy, durable, and work for withstanding the elements. He has several layers so he can shed clothes when he's hot and bulk up when he's cold. The color scheme is green and gray with geometric patterns along the edges. His shoes, which he frequently eschews the use of, have wooden soles and cloth thongs.
Role Playing Sample Gan walked along the road, staff in hand and his bag strapped to his back. He smiled as his feet reveled in the feel of the soil next to the beaten path. He was nearing Omashu and looking forward to visiting a distant kinsman, the great city's cabbage-seller. A few months back, Gan's parents had told him the kinsman had written about the woes of his cart getting destroyed several times within the space of a few days.
Gan wondered if his kinsman had suddenly turned accident-prone. He hoped not.
The other thing Gan was anticipating was sliding down the mail chutes. He had done it with his cousins once years ago, and it was tremendous fun. Now that Gan could Earthbend he was certain he could keep himself from accidentally crashing into legitimate mail carts.
"Who are you?" the guards at the main entrance demanded.
Gan simply smiled and gave his name as he pulled out his travel papers. "I'm here to see my kinsman," he continued.
One of the guards glanced over at the papers. "All right." He handed them back and said, "Let him through."
"Don't bother," Gan said before they could open the walls. "I'd like to try something." Ignoring the quizzical looks of the guards, he toed a circle around him and stopped again facing the guards. He closed his eyes and concentrated. There was a bit of rumbling and the circle he inscribed detached from the path and hovered with Gan on top of it. I knew it! The proud boy grinned broadly at his accomplishment and opened his eyes to better see where he would going. He inclined his head politely before the circle of earth soared up, bearing him over the wall.
Once he got over the wall, however...
The guards stiffened at the sudden panicked yelp followed by a crash, then sighed as a too-familiar voice wailed, "My cabbages~~!"
