"It's so...dead."
The words echoed through Auka's head. He couldn't believe this. The cold wind ripping around them was kept out by his parka, but it couldn't keep out the cold in his heart.
"Those bastards, I'll kill them Brachek, I swear, I'll kill the fire lord myself. Those butchers, those monsters. How could they!?"
Their boat was traditional water tribe, the long wooden hull flying two blue sails. It had taken them around the entire world. Contact was lost with the South recently as the war worsened. Auka and Brachek had come to find their family. To the once great Southren Citadel.
"Now look at it Auk, it was amazing. Look at it! There's no one, no one! They're all gone. Dead? Captured? Where are they?"
Auka fought the urge to throw up.
"Just land, we might as well search for survivors."
4 hours later and they had found no one. They had found plenty of Artifacts which would've bought a lot of Sea Prunes back home, but they promised each other they wouldn't desecrate the city further. They had visited the houses of their cousins, their Uncles and Aunts. Brachek's grand parents. It was so surreal, so desolate. They left as they had entered, wondering where their relatives were.
"They must have fled." Brachek's voice broke a long silence.
"You saw Auk, no bodies, there were none. They couldn't have all died, they must have fled."
Auka wished he could've been so optimistic.
"Or captured Brachek, sold as slaves. Kept as housekeepers. Or killed, and burned. Or maybe they fought, maybe they fought at sea and lost, and died with honour. Maybe they tried to flee and were hunted down. We don't know, when was the last time a message came through? Four? Five years ago? Let's go back Brachek, we have no family left here."
The next few days were silent, both of them were in contemplation, and grief. They did their duties in silence, any communication was done with hand motions.
On the 5th day Auka broke the silence.
"I'll make them pay."
