When the smell of the salt air finally reached Auka's nose he almost cried. It wasn't the crisp salt of the arctic but it meant one thing, water. Finally. Finally water. Sweet sweet delicious water. You get the picture. He'd been riding for days on his Lizard-Ostarich-horse-a-puss(Good luck picturing that one.) that he had affectionately named Creedance. Creedance was getting tired, well exhausted. They hadn't been near a town in a while. The longer they went the more Creedance's quick trots mutated into drags of the feet that seemed to require a herculean effort. The pointed rooftops of the port town meant meant Cree's (for Auka had just shortened his name) pain was almost over.
In town Auka quickly sold Cree to a merchant in town for a quick two coins. "Sorry buddy, but this is where we part ways."
"Creeeeawww!" said Creedance. Which probably meant something like But who am I supposed to catch Rat Bison (once again good luck) for and offer to them as surprise gifts in the morning. Either that or something like. Feed me.
"I know I know buddy, but you can't come with me this time." he turned to the merchant. "You better take good care of this guy, he doesn't quit." Walking away whistling a tune while simultaniously tuning out Cree's cries of discontent a ships flag caught his eye. It was an Earth Kingdom flag, but that wasn't important. He could see it was a coverup. It was thrown over another flag and a small strip of black fabric was visable up the mast. "Pirates." Auka took a step towards the shady ship but suddenly he found himself face down on the docks.
"Well well boys, looks like we caught ourselves a rare land walrus, and an ugly one at that."
Auka recognized the voice almost immediatly.
"Brachek? Is that honestly you?"
Brachek let Auka up. "Look at you Auka, you're all grown up now!"
"You're only a month older than me moron."
"54 days, that's two months little man."
"Glaciers look at you...acutally you look like hell, what happened?"
To say Brachek looked old for his age would be a gross understatement. Auka remembered his friend as a good looking resourceful teenager. Brachek now looked like he'd gone one too many rounds with a sky bison. His cheeks were scarred with what looked like knife wounds. His hair was tattered and sun bleached. His scraggly beard was collecting dirt. He was missing teeth and the ones he had left weren't in too great of shape.
"It's a long story my friend. A boring one. So where do you want to go?"
Auka paused for a second, then stated.
"The Fire Nation."
